Space for Cycling Big Ride

Please join the London Cycling Campaign on Saturday 17 May 2014 for the ‘Space for Cycling’ Big Ride, which is a fun ride with a serious message, telling politicians we want streets that are safe and inviting for everyone to cycle.

Our event starts in Park Lane, with crowds gathering from 11am for a midday start, and from 1pm there’ll be a rally on the Embankment with guest speakers (to be confirmed), with the event ending at 2pm.

Enjoy riding through famous London locations such as Hyde Park Corner, Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square in a motor-traffic-free environment that’s suitable for the whole family (see the route below).

En route, the Big Ride will also meet with the London Tweed Run, which this year takes place on the same day, and has LCC as its charity partner.

Feeder Ride

Enfield Branch will be starting a Feeder Ride from the Civic Centre at 9am

Guide rides to Big Ride

Our safe, family-friendly event is organised with the cooperation of the Metropolitican Police and Transport for London, and takes place on motor-traffic-free streets under close supervision of our expert ride marshals.

Participants will be encouraged to wear bright colours, fun costumes, to bring flags and banners, and lots of parents and children are expected, along with Londoners from all walks of life.

In 2012, LCC organised a similar, hugely successful Big Ride the weekend before the mayoral election, which played a key role in persuading Mayor Boris Johnson to massively increase his commitment to cycling, set out in his groundbreaking ‘Vision for Cycling’ blueprint for London cycling.

This year, thousands more are expected to send a message to local election candidates (as well as Mayor Boris Johnson and the media) on the weekend before the local elections, telling them that ordinary Londoners want streets that are safe and inviting for everyone to cycle.

Space for Cycling Online Survey for Enfield Ward Asks

We have now created an online survey Selecting our Enfield Ward Asks to help focus and promote our contribution to the London-wide Space for Cycling http://lcc.org.uk/articles/2014-campaign-space-for-cycling] campaign in the run-up to this year’s London borough elections.  Information about local cycle-friendly priorities supplied by members of the public will be supplied to every candidate in every ward prior to the May elections.

Local Election Space for Cycling Campaign

The London Cycling Campaign believes that every Londoner, whatever their age or ability, deserves safe and inviting space for cycling on all London’s streets. This is at the heart of our Space for Cycling Campaign ahead of the London 2014 Local Elections.

The London local elections in May 2014, will coincide with mayoralty mid-term point. We want to make sure that cycling features on the agenda of incoming ward councillors and in turn put cycling at the top of the local political agenda at the London council elections. In doing so we will also help create ‘bottom up’ pressure that holds the Mayor to account for his election promises on cycling.

Operating at ward-level Space for Cycling campaign will be even bigger and ambitious than our Love London, Go Dutch campaign in 2012. We have an opportunity to try something no other campaigning organisation has done before, targeting every candidate in every ward across the Central, Inner and Outer London boroughs, asking them to support our pro-cycling policies and measures.

These measures will be tailored to specific wards, making the campaign truly ‘local’, while at the same time promoting broader LCC policies, including our key aim of safe space for cycling, for Londoners of all ages and abilities.

LCC member and supporters and members of the public will be asked to send emails to the candidates in their wards asking them to agree to our pro-cycling policies and measures.

Our target is to ensure that every candidate in every ward is sent messages from LCC members and supporters in their area asking them to agree to the ward level ask we have determined for that area.

To that end we are asking people in the Enfield Borough what the local issues are that stop them from cycling. Please post a comment here, or to out Twitter account @EnfieldCycling or email direct info@enfieldcc.co.uk telling us what is stopping you from cycling locally.

Campaign Questionairre

Space for Cycling Ward Ask Survey

As many of you may have seen, our survey is now live and we are encouraging all members and supporters to take part. It is accessible here: www.lcc.org.uk/2014survey This survey asks people what specific cycling actions/asks they’d like to see in their local area, and asks people for their main concerns in relation to the 6 policy themes of the campaign – this could be in relation to where they live, where they work or study, or on their commute.

Please do encourage friends and family to take part. You don’t have to be a cyclist, obviously, we are keen to hear the views of a wide range of people. The more input we can get, the more representative the campaign demands will be. If you complete the survey, you’re in with a chance to win a brand new Pinnacle bike!

Space for Cycling Campaign Organisers – Looking for volunteers in Enfield

The recent cycling deaths show more than ever that we need London’s decision-makers to make our streets safe and inviting for everyone to cycle.

In May next year, London re-elects its local councillors, and they, more than anyone else, have the power to make our local streets more cycle-friendly.

In order to put pressure on our local councils, we’re recruiting Space for Cycling Campaign Organisers, committed volunteers in every borough who’ll give a few hours each week between January and May to help make our Space for Cycling campaign a success in their neighbourhood.
